Ferryhill Primary

We lifted the crowns of trees in the millennium woodland and built some tree guards for 6 young apple trees that had been planted at the end of the football pitch.

Craigmillar Castle Park

We often work with the Ranger at Craigmillar. We built 2 french drains to sort out some drainage problems and sowed wildflower seeds having prepared the ground. We have repaired some of the paths with whindust as they had been ripped up by motorbikes.

Orchard Clinic

We worked at the Orchard Clinic of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. We built two raised beds for patients to grow their own veg in, and we replanted the borders in two of the gardens.

Corstorphine Hill - odds & ends

We did a big litter pick to get the reserve ready for it's application for Green Flag status. We then removed some old fencing, relocated a picnic bench and helped dig over some beds in the Walled Garden.

Rocheid Path edging project

We re-edged 88m of the Rocheid Path along the Water of Leith at Stockbridge. We also removed an old section of path and planted the area with wildflowers and bulbs.

Drum Brae Woodland

We helped the local community woodland group to lift the crowns of the trees around the Drum Brae leisure centre. At lunch time we went sledging, and in the afternoon the council brought a chipper so we could use the woodchips to lay a path through the woods.

We help the Muiravonside Country Park Ranger Service to remove rhododendron from the park and burn it.

Royal Edinburgh Orchard

We cleared the nettles out of the orchard at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital so that the apples can be harvested for the first time in 10 years. We have also laid carpet as paths to prevent nettles regrowing this year.

Craigmillar Castle Park

We helped the Edinburgh Rangers to clear up the litter in Craigmillar Castle Park. We ended up with a full container of rubbish, including 3 motorbikes, a few beds and a fridge door. At lunch time we tried out the new adventure playground that was installed and opened last November.

North Edinburgh Cycle Paths

We have been helping the council with coppicing trees around the North Edinburgh Cycle Paths. We have removed ash and sycamore to allow the regeneration of native trees such as holly and birch. Last year we put up 20 bird boxes in Warriston Cemetery and along the cycle paths, so we have also checked these boxes to see whether they have been used and cleaned them out.

Muiravonside Country Park

We helped the Muiravonside Rangers to cut back and burn rhododendron in the Muiravonside Country Park. At lunch time we sampled the soup in the cafe and had fun on the adventure playground.

We went up Scald Law on a freezing cold but beautiful day to clear out the drains. We had to avoid the ice, but the views were worth it.

Craigmillar Castle Park - Yew Tree Avenue maintainance

We helped the Edinburgh Rangers clear out the overgrown vegetation in the Yew Tree Avenue. We cut down laurel, snowberry and elder and burnt it on a bonfire.

Pentlands - Hillend

We have previously created a short footpath leaving the car park at Hillend. This time we helped the rangers extend the path up the hill and bypass lots of mud. Later we raked a wildflower meadow - the larger one of the two...

Hermitage Doocot

The first time we helped at ther Hermitage Doocot we cleared an area of ground in front of the doo'cot and surfaced it with hard core and whin dust. We were invited back again to help clear the whole garden in front of the Doocot. We cut back all the vegetation that had become overgrown. The next plan is to divide the garden into three level platforms and invite local people and community groups to decide what to put there.

Cammo - Path resurfacing project

We returned to Cammo Estate to resurface many of their paths. In addition to this we planted some wildflowers and removed some of the pond weed from the canal to encourage other plants and animals to live there.

Burdiehouse

We helped the rangers to dismantle an old fence and replace it with a new one. We also collected seeds to plant in a wildflower meadow, and cut the grass of the meadow.

Rocheid Path

We cut back laurel and nettles along the Rocheid Path on the Water of Leith. We burned the cut vegetation in a big bonfire and cooked bananas and marshmallows on it.

Hailesland Child and Family Centre

We have been improving the garden at Hailesland Child and Family Centre. We have put in new planting beds to allow the children to grow vegetables, and a trail which will include a willow structure and a maze. We also put some more plants in the beds.

Harlaw Reservoir

We did some path maintenance an installed some seats at Harlaw Reservoir on the Pentland Hills in 2007. This year we went back to cut back vegetation and repair a fallen down drystane dyke.

At Flotterstone we worked on the old filter beds clearing the area around the path. We cut back gorse and tree branches and burnt them. We also removed an old fence.

Craigmillar Castle Park - Path maintainance

We helped the rangers at Craigmillar Castle Park to prepare for a visit from and environmental minister. We improved the paths and relaid some cobbles. We also cut back vegetation from across the path and removed ragwort from the grassland areas.

Gardening Scotland 2008

This year we are making a 6-piece puzzle as our garden. Each piece will have a different theme; wildflower meadow, wetland, fruit and vegetables, medicinal, bugs and woodland. After the show the garden will be taken to a home owned by Barnardos.

Corstorphine Hill

We have been removing Salmonberry and other invasive species on Corstorphine Hill to allow the native plants to regenerate. We have also helped the rangers maintain the paths.

Granton Youth Centre

We improved the garden at Granton Youth Centre by creating flower beds, a dry stone wall and henge, and a pergola. The children at the youth centre were on holiday so they helped us out.

Bank of Scotland helped us create a garden for a second ward at Murraypark Hospital. Here we built decking around some trees and built a pergola at the end of the garden.
