This exhibition was prepared as part of a project to understand how rehabilitation and restoration projects around water can be made more socially inclusive. What links can be built between these projects and the communities, especially poorer and marginalized groups that live nearby? More space for water

No prospects for a better life?

Dorota used to work in a textile factory. She lost her job in the 90s. She receives welfare which is barely enough for her children. “There is no hope for this neighborhood. There is only one solution: to blow it up.”

Water for youth

Irena enjoys strolling with her grandson in the neighborhood and she would love to see a sports centre for youths. She does not want to live anywhere else but Łódź.

More water, better water

Stanislav spends every free hour at the pond, “instead of arguing with my wife”. Fishing makes him happy and relaxed. For this reason he is very interested in improvement of the quality of water and restoration of the rivers and reservoirs in Łódź.

Coming together

Alina and Helena enjoy meeting their friends in the park. They talk of the past and present: about once being beautiful young girls, the crops that used to surround the apartments, their sons now working abroad. Their church, market and shops are all close to this accessible space.

Calm Sustainability

Eugeniusz has created a beautiful private space within the tranquil surroundings of the river Olechowka. The garden provides organic fruit and vegetables for Eugeniusz and his family. He uses rainwater harvested from the roof of his second home, and natural fertilizer made from locally collected animal manure.

Oasis in a concrete jungle

Wlodzimierz loves his city and especially the ponds on the river Olechowka where he often spends his free time. He notices the better water quality at his favorite ponds. He is at home in his local neighbourhood but feels the apartment buildings spoil his picture

I like where I live

Wladek is a chimney sweep and was on his way to a funeral. He loves the park, and visits as much as he can. But it is dangerous at night, the bushes should be cut, because young people hide there to use drugs. A couple of weeks ago, on St. John’s Day event, there was a celebration where girls put flowers in the lake and boys picked them out.

This is my space and my water

Zygmunt loves his place: its history, the water, the quiet, the green space. He won't leave even for holidays. His own well provides clean fresh water for him and his garden.
